Youth Food Conference Inspired by support from the McGinnity Family Foundation and our own MFC youth-serving membership organizations, the Milwaukee Food Council is excited to host a Youth Food Conference on Saturday, October 20th at Havenwoods State Forest and Nature Center.  The goals of the event include: *Highlight young food leaders who are transforming the local food system *Connect interested youth to food leadership opportunities in the city *Continue to identify key strategic areas for systems change in our local food chain.  The main agenda for the day includes:  9:00am-9:45am Breakfast and Networking 9:45am-10:15am MFC welcome and Keynote speaker 10:15-12:30pm Six Youth Presentations (15 min each)*** 12:30-1:00pm Youth and Organization panel with Q&A 1:00-2:00pm Clean Up ***We are seeking applications from young people (16-25) who are actively engaged in good food activities - from composting and gardening to starting local restaurants or food businesses.  Presenters will be awarded a $50 stipend for their presentation.  Applications are due September 28th and can be found here.    We are seeking event sponsors who understand the importance of supporting youth leadership in food system work. This class is for those with some scroll sawing experience. Matt will explain and demonstrate the techniques for cutting assembly projects on the scroll saw. The class members will then practice the techniques by cutting and assembling a patriotic night light to take home. About the instructor: Matt Gatchell has been woodworking for over 40 years and scrolling for the last 12 years. He is the owner of Gatchell’s Wood ‘N Crafts, through which he sells his scroll saw items to customers in several countries. In addition to teaching at Rockler, Matt has made scroll saw presentations to various groups and has presented several times at the Midwest Scroll Saw Trade Show.

The Raspberry Pi is a “single board computer” (or “SBC”) which runs the Linux operating system. While it can be used as an inexpensive desktop computer, it’s also useful as a media player, arcade device, and other custom purposes. We’ll look at some sample projects and then get hands-on with using a Raspberry Pi. Concepts & Objectives Learn the basics of the Raspberry Pi computing platform. Learn about the hardware and software it uses. Materials and Tools For the class we will supply you with a Raspberry Pi SBC, keyboard, mouse, and display. We’ll also explore wiring other devices to the Raspberry Pi. (Students are not required to bring a computer, but it is strongly encouraged.)
