Static Energy: Sculpture by Dale Enochs brings together work spanning the artist’s decades-long career. Based in Bloomington, Indiana, Enochs has spent his career developing unique sculptural techniques that incorporate both figurative and abstract forms in stone and metal. Numerous influences including the body, the natural world, and Eastern spirituality and culture emanate from his work. With his studio located in his backyard and his close proximity to Indiana’s rich limestone quarries, Enochs is never short of materials nor inspiration. His limestone sculptures highlight the innate beauty and intricacy of a stone typically used for building. The myriad of delicate details enlivening their surfaces allows the natural hues of the stone to shine, from brilliant white to creamy yellow, drawing viewers in and instilling a sense of calm.Over the last 40 years, Enochs’ sculptures have found homes across the globe. His work is included in numerous private and public collections, including FWMoA’s. Enochs is also prolific in the realm of public art, with 30 sculptures around the world, 16 of which are represented by their maquettes in the exhibition. Static Energy brings together the public and the private work from Enochs’ oeuvre, placing new works of art next to maquettes for sculptures created decades before. For the first time, work from the past four decades of Enochs’ dynamic career have been brought together and can be experienced at once. FWMoA is closed Mondays.

Drawn from the collection of the Huntington Museum of Art, American Impressionism: Treasures from the Daywood Collection features 41 elegant American paintings, originally from the private collection of Arthur Dayton and Ruth Woods Dayton. This exhibition showcases work from a transitional time in American art, approximately the late 19th and early 20th centuries, when artists abandoned the rigors of academic styles and subjects. They turned instead to intimate scenes of the cultivated countryside and figure studies of friends and neighbors that reflected the more modern influences of the Barbizon School, Impressionism, and Post-Impressionism. Robert Henri, George Inness, George Luks, Homer Dodge Martin, Gari Melchers, John Sloan, John Twachtman, and J. Alden Weir are among the notable artists featured in the exhibition, which serves as a luminous window into one couple’s experience in the world of art patronage.FWMoA is closed Mondays.

Day of the Dead/Dia de los MuertosOctober 3 - November 29, 2020This community-centered altar exhibit features traditional Mexican altars with sugar skulls, colorful tissue paper cutouts, and photos or personal items of deceased relatives to honor the souls of the departed. The Day of the Dead, an ancient religious celebration that originally honored children and ancestors, has evolved from a blend of Meso-American and Christian cultures, and those traditions come to life with this celebratory exhibition at FWMoA featuring memorials created by artists, families, and community groups from throughout the region.Dia de los Muertos, the holiday, is considered a festive time when family members remember and honor their dead and the continuity of life. A series of artist and family-made altars fill a FWMoA gallery, often honoring deceased loved ones or groups of individuals who have died for a cause or as a result of persecution or injustice. Common symbols include colorful skeletal figures, laughing in the face of death, or the glamorous Catrina, based on a famous etching by Mexican printmaker Jose Guadalupe Posada, which depicts a female skeleton dressed in aristocratic styles of Europeans of her time. This figure satirizes those Mexican natives who Posada felt were over imitating European traditions of the aristocracy in the pre-revolutionary era.
