On the verge of turning forty, Peter Sagal—brainiac Harvard grad, short bald Jew with a disposition towards heft, and a sedentary star of public radio—started running seriously. Much to his surprise, he kept going, participating in fourteen marathons and logging tens of thousands of miles all over the country and beyond, running the equivalent of once around the earth. In The Incomplete Book of Running, Sagal reflects on the trails, tracks, and routes he’s traveled, from  running charity races in his underwear to running as a guide alongside visually impaired runners, and running the Boston Marathon the year after the bombing. Sagal also writes about the emotional experience of running, body image, the similarities between endurance sports and sadomasochism, and the odd yet extraordinary bonds running creates between strangers and friends.Sagal is the host of the Peabody Award-winning NPR news quiz “Wait Wait…Don’t Tell Me!,” the most popular show on public radio, heard by five million listeners each week. He is also the host of Constitution USA on PBS, a playwright and screenwriter, and a featured columnist in Runner’s World. Book signing to follow. Austrian Post War Measures to Address the Crimes by Austrians During the Darkest Period of Human History by Hannah LessingSecretary General of the Austrian National Fund for the Victims of National Socialism A common stereotype among some self-proclaimed experts of Austrian contemporary history, justified merely by repetition of their mantra is that “contrary to Germany, Austria has never done anything to live up to the role of Austrians in the machinery of the 3rd Reich.” And indeed, despite radical denazification right after WW II (1945-47), Austrians soon became complacent as the Cold War kicked in, blurring the memory of the crimes and their perpetrators based on the generalized myth of “Austria as the 1st victim of National Socialism” as postulated in the Moscow Declaration of 1943 by the allied forces of the U.S., UK and the Soviet Union. It was not until Chancellor Vranitzky’s historic speech in front of the Austrian Parliament in 1991 that Austrians accepted once more the devastating role that some of their countrymen played in the Nazi machinery. Subsequently,  the leadership of Chancellor Schüssel led to the conclusion of the Washington Agreement with the U.S. in 2001, setting up several funds - most of which have been administered until today by the “National Fund of the Republic of Austria for Victims of National Socialism,” while also pressing ahead in the field of restitution of art and public property. Today, Austrian restitution laws are even referred to as best-practice by eminent U.S. leaders in Holocaust justice like Stuart Eizenstat: “I witnessed and have been deeply moved by how far Austria came from reluctantly and incompletely coming to terms with its complicated World War II role to now becoming a leader in Holocaust justice.” In memory of the 80th anniversary of the Anschluss in March and the November pogroms (aka “Night of broken glass”) and on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the Austrian law on art restitution, Secretary General of the Austrian National Fund Hannah Lessing’s address will draw a wide spectrum ranging from historic facts and the ongoing official commemorative events in Austria this year to the measures Austria has taken to address the dark past of the Nazi period. This event is part of the Austrian Lecture Series, a speaker and discussion series jointly organized by the Embassy of Austria in the United States, Johns Hopkins University's School of Advanced International Studies, and the Austrian Marshall Plan Foundation. with Gretta Ray The holiness of love, the chaos and rapture of surviving against all odds, these are what drive Gang of Youths. A five piece from Sydney founded in the confines of their religious youth, enchanted by the spectacle of worship and deliverance, its no wonder their music burns with the desperation of apocalypse. With singer Dave Leaupepes lyrics drawn from some of the most miserable life experiences available to humanity, and the bands music taking cues from rock historys most ambitious and theatrical preachers, Gang of Youths drag the beauty out of everything from hell to high heaven.Debuting in 2013 with smouldering single Evangelists, they were met with instant radio play and praise. Only just out of high school, Leaupepe was already planning to marry his girlfriend, settle down, and leave his dreams of music behind, but the bands first brush with recognition suggested there could be more to life than the path that had seemed so obviously laid before him. Things moved quickly: the band started their own record label, Mosy Recordings, got snatched up for really great support slots with Vampire Weekend, Foster The People, Manchester Orchestra, Frightened Rabbit. But as soon as the band let themselves get their hopes up, Leaupepe would begin the worst period of his life.Leaupepes soon-to-be wife was diagnosed with lung cancer after a melanoma on her ear metastasized. He began writing the songs that would eventually become their debut record so she had something to listen to in hospital. After they married, the band went into a studio in New York to track the new record. Working with producer Kevin McMahon (Swans, Rhett Miller, Titus Andronicus) and with Peter Katis (The National, Local Natives, Frightened Rabbit) mixing, theyd assembled a dream team - just one of the peaks that would contrast against the tragedy unfolding in Leaupepes life.Leaupepes wife survived, but the relationship had other problems. Struggling to balance his commitments to the band - his closest friends - against his commitments to his marriage, unable to enjoy success with one while the other was breaking down, and feeling unworthy of happiness, Leaupepe was dragged into self-destruction. I was secretive, unkind, abusing drink and drugs, Leaupepe says. The breakdown of his marriage and later attempted suicide were where Dave finally bottomed out, but the rest of the band were there to help him climb back up. I dont ever wanna be unkind again, Leaupepe says. Ill spend the rest of my life repaying them for sticking with me.Out of all that trauma and regret, Gang of Youths drew THE POSITIONS. Praised worldwide for its sincerity and nuance, blending the melodrama of rocks greatest traditions with piercing, hyperliterate lyrics, THE POSITIONS demolished any lingering notions of a pop/alternative dichotomy. Dave was also finding a new lease on life, finding strength in the band and the women in his family, including his young niece whose middle name, Magnolia, was taken from the title of THE POSITIONS most triumphant song. Debuting at #5 on the ARIA Charts and embraced by youth tastemaker triple j, THE POSITIONS became the soundtrack for the Australian winter in 2015, with the band embarking on a national tour to support the record. It was the first time much of the country was seeing Gang of Youths up close, and they were charmed in every state. Reports praised their thumping live sets for living up to their songs stadium-sized ambitions, stating that the band were a guaranteed success.A year later the band released LET ME BE CLEAR, following on the success of their 2014 five-ARIA-Award-nominated debut album THE POSITIONS. Addressing similar themes of loss and heartbreak trumped by togetherness, the EP also showed the band expanding their scope with sweeping string arrangements and renewed dedication to songs as epic declarations of feeling. The band hoped to achieve admirable and genuine things with this new release, as said by Leaupepe, I want to make the most hopeful, life-affirming music possible. We want listeners to feel affirmed, to feel hopeful, and feel more. Thats the most important thing we want to accomplish.Once again scoring glowing praise across the board, LET ME BE CLEAR cemented Gang of Youths as mainstays of the Australian music landscape. After the success of their UK, European and USA tour, Gang Of Youths came back to Australian shores and rocked crowds and critics alike with stellar performances at Byron Bays Splendour In The Grass and St. Jeromes Laneway, featuring songs from LET ME BE CLEAR, and also teasing fans with a taste of their highly-anticipated sophomore album GO FARTHER IN LIGHTNESS which had everyone raving about the performance.Having since given up their day jobs to throw their all into the band, they began laying the blueprint for the next chapter of their lives, showing no signs of slowing down at all.Part of that was launching their record label internationally, seeking to recreate the precious autonomy thatd paid off so richly with THE POSITIONS. Another was relocating to London to find a permanent home for the band as a unit. Having spent the past few years shuffling between Australia, the US, and the UK, their hand was forced when keyboardist Jung Kims Australian visa was cancelled, and rather than split the group across continents, they chose to embark together on northern soil.Marking the start of their new lives, Gang Of Youths released their highly anticipated sophomore album GO FARTHER IN LIGHTNESS, a nod towards the optimism and kindness the band have found by surviving their various ordeals, this new record continues the work that has already so indelibly imprinted on fans across the world. Attempting to compartmentalise the past five years into 16 tracks was no mean feat, but the band came away with songs which encourage listeners to persevere as theyve tried to, empathising with those whove brushed up against death, suffering and loss every step of the way.The album was received with great critical acclaim, debuting at #1 on the ARIA Charts and securing triple js feature album. The colossal year continued for the band, taking out a total of four 2017 ARIA Awards for GO FARTHER IN LIGHTNESS, including Best Group, Best Rock Album, Producer Of The Year and the prestigious Apple Music Album Of The Year, cementing their status as one of Australias leading rock bands. The 2018 account for Gang Of Youths opened up with three tracks from GO FARTHER IN LIGHTNESS charting in the Top 10 of triple js Hottest 100, making them the third act to reach this achievement in Hottest 100 history. What Can I Do If The Fire Goes Out? was voted #10, The Deepest Sighs, the Frankest Shadows reached #5, and Let Me Down Easy hitting #2. Gang Of Youths Like A Version of The Middle Easts Blood also made it into the countdown, sitting at #41.

with Public Practice, GONG GONG GONG Since they appeared with their self-titled, self-released EP back in 2016, Washington, DC trio Flasher has exuded both clarity of intent and radiant self-confidence. Critically applauded from the start, that initial release offered a clear blueprint. By turns razor sharp and woozy, skipping from shoegaze to punk and back again, it offered confirmation of a band whose wiry energy and melodic ease made them instantly arresting.Today, Flasher announce their signing to Domino. They've also shared a new video and song, the exhilarating "Skim Milk." The band describes the song and video below:"The themes in "Skim Milk" and its video might be described as being haunted by your own desire for belonging. We're not bemoaning "no future, no fate", we're advocating for it. From getting a mortgage, to going to college, to crafting public policy, folks are always telling you to think of your future, to make choices in the name of some future. But most folks don't have the privilege to live outside the present. This kind of future tense, aspirational bullshit means being held hostage by a future that's already abandoned you. We'd rather escape to something new and unknown than hold out for a good life that hates us and expects us to make lemonade out of miserableness. Instead of holding out and hanging on, we're here to tell you (and ourselves) - "go.""

When Jesse Royal was only a cub, the Lord revealed to his mother that she would have to releaseone of her sons to the world, proclaiming he will be a psalmist, declaring righteousness and justicethroughout creation. As Jesse matured into a young lion, his mother observed in him a strong senseof integrity and a natural ability to positively affect those around him. But, it was his deep spirituality, passion for life and unique connection to music that would convince her that he was being molded tobe used by the Creator.Jesse David Leroi Grey, aka Jesse Royal, was born April 29, 1989. He enjoyed his early years in thehills of Maroon Town and the District of Orange in St. James before moving in the late 90s with hismother and brother to join his father in Kingston. As fate would have it, Royal developed a specialrelationship with Daniel Bambaata Marley (son of Ziggy Marley) at school. His friendship with Danielproved to be fuel to the fire as they shared a deep passion for music and football. Their friendshipevolved as they spent a great part of their childhood together. Soon the natural inclination confirmedthey were simply brothers with different mothers. As these cubs became lions so grew their devotionto music. With the help of longtime friend Curt Qban White they began composing and creatingtheir own music. And together they proceeded to fulfill what they knew was a predestined musicaljourney, designed to inspire, engage and unite people beyond all geographic borders. After Jesse returned home from schooling abroad, he reestablished a relationship with high schoolfriend and young producer Kareem Remus Burrell (son of Philip Fatis Burrell). They begancreating and composing music together also, which developed into a Movement as they sharedsimilar views on the social state of Jamaica.Blessed with a voice that captures the pain and hunger of a downtrodden people; Royals militantcharacter and profound lyricism caught the heart of heralded reggae producer, Philip Fatis Burrell.Fatis Burrell, affectionately called Father had a great and pure impact on the old soul of Jesse; ashe credits him as an invaluable inspiration and one of the most influential individuals that he hasever encountered.Working with musicians such as Sly Dunbar, Robbie Shakespeare, Donald Dennis, Earl ChinnaSmith and Monty Savory; Jesse is currently in the studio putting the final touches on his debut albumwith producer Kareem Burrell of the XTM.Nation. Jesse Royal also recently released his debutmixtape dubbed Misheni, which means The Mission in Swahili.
