A presentation on “Walls, Bridges and the Power of Empathy: Leading Effectively Within a Deeply Fragmented Society” will be the focus of Park University’s 26th annual Dr. Jerzy Hauptmann Distinguished Lecture Series event on Wednesday, Sept. 26. This year’s lecture will be held in the auditorium at the Lenexa (Kan.) City Hall (17101 W. 87th Street Parkway), home of the University’s Lenexa Campus, starting at 6:30 p.m. Admission to the event is free and open to the public, but attendees are requested to register at park.edu/hauptmann2018 to ensure a seat. This year’s Hauptmann Lecture featured speaker will be Reggie Robinson, J.D., vice chancellor for public affairs at the University of Kansas. Robinson’s talk will focus on the idea that society’s collective capacity to engage in a persuasive argument as its objective has been lost. He will explore this idea as a way to consider the difficult challenge of providing effective leadership in the current environment, arguing that an enhanced capacity for empathy is an essential tool for leadership in an environment characterized by increased fragmentation and “tribalism.” According to Robinson, “leadership” could be interchanged with “the presidency” and attendees will likely relate the discussion to this leadership position, but the topic is relevant well beyond the presidency. “This issue is truly nonpartisan as no side seems to have much of a lock on empathy,” Robinson said. “This topic is timely, especially when we consider how those in formal leadership roles have to attempt to lead a society that appears increasingly fragmented.” Robinson was appointed to his current role at KU in January after serving as director of the School of Public Affairs and Administration for three years. He also holds a faculty rank of professor of public administration. Prior to joining the University of Kansas, Robinson was a professor of law and director of the Center of Law and Government at Washburn University. He has also served as president and chief executive officer of the Kansas Board of Regents and as chief of staff to the KU chancellor. Robinson was a White House Fellow and special assistant to Attorney General Janet Reno in 1993, and he subsequently served in a number of senior positions within the Department of Justice, including deputy associate attorney general of the U.S. and acting director for Justice Department’s Office for Victims of Crime. Robinson, a National Academy of Public Administration Fellow, earned his undergraduate and law degrees from the University of Kansas. Prior to law school, he was a field artillery officer in the U.S. Army. The lecture series is named in honor of the late Park University professor emeritus of political science and public administration, Jerzy Hauptmann, Ph.D. Hauptmann taught at Park for more than 50 years, and launched the University’s first graduate degree program in 1982. In 2001, Park’s School for Public Affairs was renamed the Hauptmann School of Public Affairs in honor of this remarkable educator. The Dr. Jerzy Hauptmann Distinguished Guest Lecture Series was established through the generosity of alumni, colleagues and friends of Hauptmann upon Hauptmann’s 40th anniversary at Park University. The Hauptmann Lecture brings outstanding scholars to the Kansas City area to address topics related to Hauptmann’s three areas of study: international politics, public administration and democracy.
