"'Accessibility and inclusion' are great in theory, but how do we put these concepts into practice?" Alex Locust Alex Locust/ the Glamputee uses his personal experiences, education, and social power to create knowledge, awareness, and space for those who have been left out of the conversation. His acclaimed candid, intersectional conversations promote empathic understanding of different communities and vital strategies for owning our discomforts and celebrating our strengths. Join us for a morning workshop of real talk, experiential exercises, group work and lots of laughs are we try to negotiate our hidden biases and lingering misjudgments. Over the course of this 90-minute workshop, Alex will demystify the complex phenomenon of microaggressions, particularly as these occur in creating inclusive, cooperative communities. That might mean exploring how we think we communicate, and how we actually communicate around issues such as race, identity, sexuality, and disabilities. Ultimately, the goal of this morning is to empower people to begin engaging their respective communities in these challenging, yet important dialogues. As a result, attendees will have an increased awareness of respectful language and behavior as well as strategies to promote environments where community members can be open and engaged in encountering differences across cultural experiences. About Alex Locust / the Glamputee: Alex Locust is a Certified Rehabilitation Counselor and proud biracial, glamputee spreading the word about disability justice one workshop at a time. Whether on the runway or in a counseling session, Alex aspires to embody the tenets of disability justice and fiercely advocates for equity in all community spaces. He graduated from San Francisco State University with an M.S. in Clinical Rehabilitation and Mental Health Counseling and earned the Peggy H. Smith Distinguished Graduate Student award as well as Graduate Student of the Year from the National Council on Rehabilitation Education. Currently, he is working as a substance use counselor for men who have sex with men at the Stonewall Project within the SF AIDS Foundation. In addition to counseling full time, Alex facilitates a variety of workshops within the Bay Area. Armed with bombastic charm, whimsical humor, and a sharp wit, Alex synthesizes his professional insight with his lived experience to create engaging workshops grounded in cultural humility, intersectionality, and fostering empathetic, holistic views of marginalized communities. Alex specializes in work supporting people with disabilities and is passionately committed to raising awareness of the disability justice movement. He hopes to continue facilitating candid dialogues in a broad spectrum of environments in order to empower others to champion disability civil rights as well.
